Infographics Inspiration
Information design, or data visualization, plays a vital role in media and communication today. Often times, words and numbers themselves cannot adequately portray information and data. Infographics serve to fill this void between what we see and what we read. In this way, good information design can help make complex data easier to comprehend and simply more enjoyable. To top it off, infographics are quite often aesthetically pleasing - the examples I am about to show you are chock full of awesome illustration, interesting colors and clever headlines! Check ‘em out - get inspired!

Overnewsed But Uninformed
Overnewsed But Uninformed is an awesome project that analyzes our intake of news in today’s globalized world, how we get it, where we get it, all in the hope of proving that the massive amounts of media and information we are exposed to has not made us any more informed. The graphics are visually stunning and some of the graphs are trully impressive - I really wonder how they did some of them.
Spam Annual Report 2007
This is a really interesting report that shows how prevalent spam is in our internet lives of today. The numbers are simply astounding - 79,000,000,000 spams per day, 346,093,000,000,000 spams total. It really makes me wonder why anyone would want to inject all this pointless bullshit into the internet - a place where people go to get information, to communicate, to research, and to learn. I myself can attest to the prevalence of spam - everday, I get stupid keyword-stuffed comments on this site about free Levitra, pharmaceutical discounts and the like. Well, anyways, this report looks really awesome - it has a beautiful black, blue and white color scheme and has a nice matted finish.
Good Sheet
Good Sheet is an awesome infographics series from GOOD (who, by the way, have a really beautiful site - you should check it out). In their own words: Good Sheet is “a weekly series breaking down an important issue to help make sense of the world around us.” The Good Sheet has tackled issues such as the economy, the war, health, and more. Some of these were available at Starbucks - I want one!!
The Feltron Annual Report
The Feltron Annual Report is a personal project by Nicholas Felton. Basically, Felton keeps track of mounds and mounds of data throughout the year - including music listened to, places travelled to, photographs taken, etc. Then, at the end of the year, Felton compiles all this information and data into a beautiful report. They are available as booklets for only $7. Unfortunately, they are all sold out :(. Felton spoke at the Future Of Web Design Conference this year in New York City and spoke about the ways in which he compiles his data - it was a very interesting talk. Feltron is also the co-founder of Daytum, an awesome web app that lets you track your own data throughout the year.
On The Web
Designing The News
Designing The News “is a series of visual experiments which explore the news in various ways to encourage new ways of understanding information. The source of information for this project will come from the Guardian newspaper.” The outcome is really stunning and it looks like some of these things took a lot of work.
Bananas & Coffee
Bananas & Coffee is a really cool personal project from Niki Brown of DesignO’Blog. Niki charts the bananas and coffee he consumes using Fusion Charts, Google Charts, jQuery and CSS. The result looks really nice, with a color scheme that fits really well with the theme of bananas and coffee.

Comment by Jon Williams on November 29, 2008 at 10:55 amGreat list and some amazing examples. I love the “death and taxes” and “designing the news”.
I think it’s a great skill to be able to take huge chunks of information and break it down into a visual guide like these designers have done.
